2019 "The Rhôme Series" Syrah Rosé
The grapes for this wine were picked from the leased and self-farmed "Sivan Reservoir Vineyard" meaning all management and quality decisions are made in-house. The vineyard is located in the "Upper Yarra Valley" and is about 290 metres above sea level. The vineyard is protected from the hot western sun by gum trees and is all but a stone's-throw from the Silvan Reservoir.
The Syrah grapes for this rosé were handpicked on the 12th March 2019. They were gently whole bunch pressed to minimise colour and
over-extraction and the pressings were discarded. The juice was then transferred
to old barriques for (a wild) fermentation, where maturation occurred in situ. The wine received only a minimal (coarse) filtration, and the only product addition was a low dose of sulphur dioxide.
170 Dozen bottles produced.
Made in a dry Provençal style, the appearance is a very pale pink.
The aroma presents Syrah varietal tones of raspberry, rhubarb and just-ripe strawberry. There are also notes of white pepper, star anise and violet.
On the palate, there are tones of peach skin, red apple and cranberry, which combine with summer flowers and a “solids funk” character which help create layers of interest and length. The typical shiraz creamy mid-palate gives this rosé juiciness and carries the flavour and texture into a lingering finish.
Best drunk in it’s youth, but the wine will also develop favourably over the next 2 years.
