Elements in Alchemy. The Foundations of my Winemaking
Without the four basic elements of earth, air, fire and water no alchemical transformation can occur. It is important to use each element's properties in the winemaking to deliver unique wines with layers of character. – Stuart Dudine, Winemaker and Founder.
Water
The function of feeling and emotion. Looking inward. Cold and wet. Colour Blue.
The water element allows my emotions and personality into my wines. Water is for self-reflection and inquisitiveness which enhances my creativeness and multilayered approach to my winemaking.
Fire
The function of energy and activity. Symbolises courage, daring and enthusiasm. Colour Red and orange.
Fire is the most important element as it’s what makes any alchemical transformation possible. It is expansive and up reaching; giving enthusiasm and courage. The fire element is for perseverance and future dreaming.
Air
Function of thinking, thought and imagination. It is a life giving force for the mind and body. Colour white, yellow and grey.
Air encompasses the mind, soul and wellbeing. This under-valued element is vital to ensure my decisions are clear and well considered. I know my best wines are made when I’m focused and in a good headspace.
Earth
Function of sensations, practical movements and the body. Contractive. Colour brown and green.
The earth element encompasses the physical matter and practical considerations of the world around us. I draw on this element to feel the sensations of the environment around me. Being present and physical with everything that goes into a bottle of wine allows for greater understanding of the nuances on an extraordinary level.

Philosopher’s tree
The Philosophers’ Tree is the precursor to the Philosophers’ Stone. The Philosopher's Stone is capable of transforming any base metal into gold and is the most sort after prize for any alchemist. The Philosophers’ Tree reminds me of my never-ending quest to create gold by turning grapes into wine. |
