Orange-citrus and stone fruit aromas wrapped up in lifted buttery tones. Tropical fruit notes of pawpaw are present with struck match, pine needle and toasted almonds.
The palate shows pears, peaches with cream. Sweeter oak tones of macadamia nut show with soft-buttery notes laced throughout. The wine is showing zesty and fresh acid with pristine lemon and orange citrus tones. The textural broadness of the wine helps creates a clean and intriguing finish.
2021 will go down as a very special vintage. The season will be marked with a nod to the vintages of old in the Yarra Valley, where cooler conditions allowed for a long ripening window which allowed for excellent acid, elegance and intense flavour development.
Personally, we likened the vintage to 2020 and also the amazing 2017 vintage. Drawing on this knowledge we sat back and waited a little in respects to picking to allow for full flavour maturity. In the winery it was a vintage to soak up and enjoy. The cooler conditions and low yields combined to allow us to feather the fermentations into the most idyllic spot prior to winter.
This release is sourced from the Primavera vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley. The block sits at 230m above sea level and the clone is P58. The vineyard was planted in 2001 on red friable clay most commonly found in the upper Yarra. The red soils give mid-palate weight to all wines, and Chardonnay is ideally suited to this.
The wine was handpicked on 12th March. Once at the winery, the grapes were wholebunch pressed to one second-use hogshead. A wild fermentation was conducted and the wine was left to undergo a natural malolactic fermentation. The wine was stirred occasionally during maturation in order to build texture and rich savoury tones. Bottling occurred in January 2022 where the wine is unfined and unfiltered.
The appearance is golden with green tinges. There are orange-citrus and stone fruit aromas wrapped up in lifted buttery tones. Tropical fruit notes of pawpaw are present with struck match, pine needle and toasted almonds.
