Silver Medal -  Yarra Valley Wine Show 2015 - 92 points
91 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Bronze Medal - Victorian Wine Show 2015

2014 was an exceptional year for later ripening varieties like Syrah in the Yarra Valley. There were two significant weather events during the growing season which were both thankfully avoided due to the late-ripening nature of the variety; a cold and wet spring affected flowering of early varieties, like Pinot and Chardonnay as did a heat wave in early January which again impacted early ripening varieties.

The parcel of grapes for this Syrah were taken from the Warramunda vineyard in Coldstream, Victoria. The block has a gentle north-facing aspect and the row orientation is north-south. The vine material is sourced from the Bests Old Block, some of the oldest and best performing Syrah vines in Australia. Soils are composed of grey-clay loams with pockets of sandstone.

The grapes were picked at a moderate potential alcohol on the 10th of March 2014, when the grapes displayed bright red fruits and floral notes with good natural acidity. After being refrigerated overnight; the grapes were split into two parcels. Two thirds of the parcel was destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeast using gentle pumpovers for 18 days. One third of the parcel was placed into a tank as 100% whole clusters and sealed up. The whole cluster portion fermented gently for 5 weeks prior to pressing. Both portions were run to old barriques for malolactic fermentation and were racked for bottling in January 2015.

This medium bodied wine displays elegant primary fruit notes of blueberry, strawberry and lifted red cherry notes. Pickled Sicilian green olive, white pepper, lavender and spice characters underpin the layered aroma of this wine.

The palate is fresh and approachable. Primary fruit notes of fresh blueberry and raspberry are complemented by floral notes of lavender and violet. The tannin profile is soft and luscious; which combined with the mouth-watering finish produces a wine that is long, flavoursome and elegant.

The wine can be enjoyed with many dishes; beef fillet on a bed of sliced beetroot and parsnip puree, duck with cherry glaze or with soft cheeses with a quince paste. It's also brilliant with spaghetti bolognese with friends or family or simply enjoyed with conversation.
