2018 "The Good Earth" Syrah Rosé
94 Points - Qwine

The grapes for this wine were picked from the leased and self-farmed "Sivan Reservoir Vineyard". Having full control over the growing season produces many new challenges, but the ultimate result is better quality grapes. The vineyard is located in the "Upper Yarra Valley" and is about 240 metres above sea level. The soil is composed of rich, red friable volcanic clay. The vineyard is protected from the hot western sun by gum trees and is all but a stone's-throw from the Silvan Reservoir.
The Syrah grapes for this rosé were handpicked on the 19th March 2018. They were gently whole bunch pressed to minimise colour and over-extraction and the pressings were discarded. The juice was then transferred to old barriques for (a wild) fermentation, and maturation occurred in situ. Malolactic fermentation was inhibited. The wine was blended and bottled in June 2018 and is filtered, but unfined.
110 Dozen bottles produced.
Made in a dry provençal style, the appearance is pale pink. The aroma presents varietal tones of fresh white pepper and violets. There are also some fruit notes strawberry, fresh rhubarb and red peach skin.
The palate shows sour cherry, blood orange and cranberry with notes of dried fennel seed, sweet paprika, and gingerbread. The finish is quite long and acid driven with toasted pink marshmallow and white pepper helping to finish the wine.
