2017 "The Good Earth" Grenache
The grapes for the Grenache was were sourced from Tulley Wells Vineyard in Lima East. The vineyard is located north of Mansfield in Central Victoria, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level.
The fully mature, 35 years old vines can self regulate cropping habits and can withstand seasonal conditions well.
The grapes were handpicked early in order to create an open, fruit driven style. Upon arrival into the winery, 95% of the grapes were destemmed and 5% remained as whole bunches in the same fermenter. In order to increase colour and mouthfeel, the must was cold-soaked for 5 days prior to a natural warming and a natural fermentation. Fermentation was gentle with only punchdowns employed after fermentation commenced. After a 12 day fermentation, the wine was pressed to tank and run to old wood for maturation and malolactic fermentation. The wine was blended and bottled in October/November 2017. It is unfiltered and unfined.
The appearance is ruby with purple hue. The aroma is alluring with toasted spice, rhubarb and lifted cherry. There are Mederterrian notes of baked pancetta, rosemary and twiggy bark.
The palate shows tension between fruit and texture. There are notes of red cherry, lavender, white pepper and pine needle. The finish is of creamy choc-spice and tannins are chamios-like.
This fresh, crunchy, fruit driven wine is best drunk in its youth and could be served with a slight chill in the warmer Australian months.
